San Clemente – Zuleta!

San Clemente – Zuleta!

The basic concept behind this proposal is “coexistence”, it means, allowing a cultural exchange between our visitors and community residents through the stay on basic accommodation facilities while our host families want to show the traveler an authentic way of life based on our Andean cosmovision. This time together allows tourists to share indigenous culture, enjoy a new environment, experience a different way of life and delight in the proximity of nature and a traditional life, all within mutual respect.

In the other hand, in a great contrast Zuleta is a colonial working farm of 1,500 hectares that belongs to the family of Mr. Galo Plaza Lasso, a former president of Ecuador, for more than 100 years. At Zuleta you are a guest of the family and you are welcomed as such. Zuleta is for sure the best Hacienda in our entire Ecuador, with plenty options to explorer.

After breakfast, we will departure to Cuicocha crater lake or lake of gods, a very important worhip site of our local community. Depending of your interest, you can hike from 1 to 5 hours around the lake in the Orchid ́s pathway. Box lunch is included, which will give the freedom to stay more time in the
woods, if it is your preference. Then, the whole region offers you a great number of other options like Cotacachi, the Leather ́s town, Peguche Waterfall and workshops like Ñanda Mañachi (the Andean music house), San Antonio de Ibarra famous for their handicrafts and art in wood. Back to San Clemente, with a member of your host family, you will walk through their gardens full of different ancestral crops and medicinal plants, identifying and learning about their properties and uses. If you are lucky, you will harvest your own Andean dinner.

After breakfast, we will say goodbye to San Clemente, expecting that all our clients, now leave this community with new prospects and ideas about the richness of a simple life in communion with the “pachamama”. Then, you will live a pleasant and enriching experience when you meet the Otavaleños, you will perceive their proud spirit, their modesty, and their attachment to a tradition that has existed since pre-spanish times. Owners of an ancient culture, exhibit with their ancestral costumes the complacency they feel for their land, for this and much more the artisan market of otavalo is one of the most important and colorful in the region. As soon as you consider is time to keep going, we will drive to one of best examples of beautiful structures of great historical and ecological value, Hacienda Zuleta, offering to us the opportunity to go back into Colonial life. Each hacienda has its own magic, but Zuleta has everything in one, like the condor huasi project, a cheese factory, an archeological site, located in the border with Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve, the opportinuty to see wild condors and the shy anden spectacled bears, and if it is not enough you can practice horseback riding, hiking, biking, etc. Hacienda Zuleta

In the morning, you can choose how you would like to visit “Condor Huasi” or house of condors by horse, car o bike. There is a group of condors in captivite doing a very important job in benefit of the wild ones. The purpose of the project is to obtain babies condors in captivity, and release them, but for this they need first to keep the condors
healthy. For this they must give them adequate environment and care. In addition, through behavioral studies, they know if the couples are compatible and to take decisions about the setting of the confinement, feeding, adaptation of spaces and others. Right there, you can hike into a very good andean mountain forest, always looking for more wildlife. Back at the Hacienda, lunch will be ready. After lunch, we leave to do our last activity, the visit to a rosefarm. Nowadays, Ecuador is one of the three most important countries in the world exporting some of the most beautiful flowers to 130 different markets worldwide. You will learn all about this industry, from planting, hasvesting to packaging. Our equadorian roses are very well reconized for its quality, color, variaty, beaty, and uninterrupted production.
